World Day for Farmed Animals: Our Mission. Our Movement.

World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA) has stood as a beacon of remembrance and activism since its inception in 1983. This year, we marked the 41st anniversary of this powerful program, which memorializes and mourns the billions of animals raised and slaughtered for food. Held annually on October 2nd, WDFA offers an opportunity to reflect on the scale of suffering by animals raised and killed for food while empowering vegans, activists, and compassionate individuals to take action in defense of these animals; WDFA serves as a reminder that our work will continue until we have ended the use of animals for food.

Honoring Farmed Animals with Action and Awareness

This year’s WDFA featured a variety of impactful activities designed to shed light on the plight of farmed animals. Across the globe, demonstrations, protests, tabling, the #FastAgainstSlaughter, and government proclamation requests were employed to raise awareness about the suffering inflicted on animals used for food. One of the key elements of WDFA is its ability to bridge activism and education, and 2024 was no exception.

Notably, WDFA gained proclamations from the state of Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Baltimore, Maryland, recognizing the day and its significance. These proclamations are victories that affirm the growing awareness and support for animal rights. Though obtaining government proclamations becomes increasingly challenging, we remain persistent in our advocacy efforts, determined to ensure that the plight of farmed animals continues to be publicly recognized and addressed.

At George Mason University in Washington, D.C., FARM staff and volunteers engaged directly with students, tabling and discussing the need for a plant-based world and an end to animal exploitation. Similarly, at American University and in Puerto Rico, we shared the message of compassion through leafleting and personal outreach. These grassroots efforts are crucial in igniting interest and action among the next generation of advocates, aligning with FARM’s broader mission to inspire change at every level of society.

Amplifying the Voices for Animals

Media outreach is another key component of WDFA’s impact, and this year, FARM continued to utilize Letters to the Editor as a vehicle for spreading awareness. FARM’s Executive Director submitted a powerful letter detailing the devastating effects of factory farming and the urgent need for compassionate, plant-based alternatives. This letter, which contrasted the brutality of factory farming with the benefits of a plant-based diet, was published in 15 newspapers across the United States, reaching a combined circulation of over 601,000 readers.

Additionally, a joint letter written by FARM’s Associate Director and Program Assistant connected the spirit of Rosh Hashanah—a time of reflection and renewal—with WDFA’s message of hope for a better future for all beings. The publication of these pieces not only amplifies our message but also serves as an example of how the movement for animal rights continues to grow and gain visibility.

FARM has long believed in the power of written advocacy, and despite changing trends in media, Letters to the Editor remain an essential tool for outreach. As long as newspapers offer space for commentary, FARM will continue to provide information that encourages compassion and promotes the benefits of adopting a plant-based diet. These efforts align directly with our mission and ensure that the message of WDFA reaches audiences far and wide.

Building a Compassionate Community

FARM’s Compassionate Activist Network (CAN) also plays a vital role in WDFA’s outreach efforts. With dedicated volunteers, CAN supports individuals who are eager to take action for animals. Through literature distribution, outreach, and participation in initiatives like the #FastAgainstSlaughter, CAN helps to foster a sense of community and shared purpose among activists. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the movement, and we are committed to providing them with the resources, training, and support they need to succeed.

This year, we have made significant strides in developing education and training opportunities for new advocates. By coordinating with existing animal rights training platforms, we are creating a monthly plan to keep our volunteers engaged and motivated. WDFA serves as a powerful springboard for advocacy, offering a variety of ways for individuals to get involved, whether through public demonstrations, making a personal commitment like fasting, and posting on social media.

A Legacy of Compassion

World Day for Farmed Animals has been a cornerstone of FARM’s mission for over four decades, and its legacy will live on until we achieve a world free from animal exploitation. By bringing together like-minded individuals and organizations, WDFA continues to raise awareness about the suffering of farmed animals and inspire action. Every year, we see the movement grow, driven by the conviction that animals are not food but friends deserving of our compassion.

As we look to the future, we are reminded that WDFA is not just a day of remembrance—it is a rallying cry for change. With “Our Mission. Our Movement.” as our guiding theme, we will continue to push forward, advocating for the rights of farmed animals and working tirelessly to end their suffering. Together, we can build a more compassionate, plant-based world.
