World Day for Farmed Animals: Our Mission. Our Movement.
World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA) has stood as a global day of remembrance and action since 1983, honoring the billions of farmed animals who suffer and die each year in the food system. Now in its 42nd year, WDFA continues to inspire compassion, reflection, and activism around the world. On October 2nd, compassionate individuals, advocates, and organizations joined together once again to say in one voice: animals are not food—they are friends deserving of respect, freedom, and care.
This year’s observance featured new initiatives designed to empower local activism and strengthen community engagement. Among the most notable accomplishments of WDFA 2025 were the official government proclamations recognizing the day. The State of Maryland proclaimed World Day for Farmed Animals. FARM Puerto Rico was also able to secure a proclamation from their new governor, making 2025 the third consecutive year WDFA has been proclaimed in Puerto Rico. Each proclamation represents a meaningful step forward in validating the cause within civic spaces and encouraging conversations about compassion, sustainability, and justice for animals.
Media outreach also remained a powerful part of this year’s impact. FARM continued to rely on the persuasive power of the written word through Letters to the Editor and media engagement, publishing commentaries and opinion pieces across the country. These letters reached hundreds of thousands of readers, spotlighting the link between industrial animal agriculture, environmental degradation, and public health, while offering plant-based living as a solution grounded in compassion. Our social media campaigns, videos, and digital outreach amplified this message even further, inspiring thousands of individuals to participate in WDFA actions, share their stories, and join the call to end the use of animals for food.

A major advancement for 2025 was the launch of FARM’s new WDFA Mini-Grant Program—an initiative that empowered grassroots activists to create impactful events in their own communities. Through grants ranging from $100 to $300, FARM provided direct funding to support leafleting, tabling, public demonstrations, vigils, art installations, and other awareness-building activities. These mini-grants proved transformative, allowing passionate advocates—especially students and first-time organizers—to participate meaningfully in WDFA without financial barriers. This program marked a significant step toward decentralizing activism and strengthening the movement’s foundation through grassroots empowerment.
FARM’s Compassionate Activist Network (CAN) played a pivotal role in WDFA’s success. CAN volunteers organized outreach events, distributed literature, and took part in the #FastAgainstSlaughter, a 24-hour global fast symbolizing solidarity with the animals who suffer in silence. Through local tabling, campus events, and social-media outreach, CAN participants helped to build community, compassion, and commitment.
WDFA 2025 also provided valuable insights that will guide our future efforts. The success of the mini-grant program demonstrated that small-scale funding can unlock powerful activism in underrepresented areas, while our experience pursuing proclamations reminded us of the importance of persistence and early outreach to civic leaders. The surge in youth engagement confirmed that the next generation is ready to lead, and our continued emphasis on training, storytelling, and visibility will ensure they are supported. Strengthening our tracking systems for events, participants, and media impact will help us measure success more effectively and share our achievements with greater transparency.
As we look ahead to 2026, FARM remains committed to building on the momentum of WDFA. We plan to expand the mini-grant program, deepen our partnerships with schools and community organizations, and create more digital resources to make participation easier and more impactful. We will continue to amplify the voices of activists through the Compassionate Activist Network, expand our global reach through proclamations and collaborations, and invest in tools to measure and showcase the movement’s growth.
World Day for Farmed Animals is more than a single day of remembrance—it is a living legacy of compassion and resistance. Each year, it brings together individuals from all walks of life who share one powerful vision: a world where animals are free from exploitation and suffering. On October 2, 2025, thousands stood united once again to honor their lives and renew our shared commitment to justice for all beings. With every leaflet distributed, every conversation sparked, and every heart opened, we move closer to a compassionate, plant-based world.
